We’re already into April and Wyoming
is beginning to wonder if spring will ever arrive. Many parts of
the state continue to experience a long, snowy and cold winter
season, and while we need the moisture, a little warm weather
would be welcome. As you
will see in this edition of the Rampage, it’s election time for
Wyoming FNAWS. Nomination announcements were sent in late March
for three open seats; five nominations were submitted. Please
read the biographies and information on the five candidates,
cast your votes and return your ballots by June 2nd. Results
will be announced at our general membership meeting on June 7th
in Lander.
Two of the three open seats are
those of two long-time Wyoming FNAWS board members: Jim Collins
and Fritz Meyer. Both have decided to step down and make room
for some “new blood.”
Jim, a former President and Past
President, has been tireless in his commitment to Wyoming FNAWS
and Wyoming’s bighorn sheep. Among his most noteworthy
accomplishments are the successful negotiations to retire
several U.S. Forest Service grazing allotments that placed
domestic sheep in the proximity of bighorn sheep herds. As most
of you know, co-mingling of domestic sheep and bighorns can be
devastating and these buyouts were instrumental in protecting
many bighorn herds in the state.
Fritz dedicated a great deal of
his time to a multi-year predator control project to help defend
our Whiskey Mountain bighorns in Dubois against predation by
coyotes. Thanks to his involvement, the project was a great
success. He also handled the coordination and sales of many of
the Wyoming Game & Fish Commissioners licenses that Wyoming
FNAWS was fortunate to receive – we couldn’t have done it
without him.
On behalf of the Wyoming FNAWS
board, I want to thank Jim and Fritz for their invaluable
contributions. They will both be missed, but we hope to continue
to benefit from their experience.
This year’s fundraiser is looking
to be another success. In an effort to keep the next generation
educated and involved in hunting, we will hold a drawing for a
youth cow elk hunt. All attendees will be able to enter ones
name of a youngster 12-16 years old and the winner will receive
a guided cow elk hunt. It’s an outstanding opportunity – don’t
miss out on it.
Hope to see you in June –
Bob Sundeen
